Ride Overview
A Fierce Green Ride is a bikepacking event through the White Mountains of eastern Arizona! Named after Aldo Leopold’s perspective-changing encounter with a Mexican gray wolf, this ride is completely self-supported and takes riders 400 miles and 32,000 feet of gain through the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. A Fierce Green Ride (AFGR) travels along a modified version of El Lobo Lupus with a start and finish in Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona at the WME Village 8 Movie Theater. The event takes place on September 26, 2025 at 7 AM.
AFGR takes bikepackers through the high elevation heart of the White Mountains, Blue Range, and Mogollon Rim of eastern Arizona where the Mexican Gray Wolf has been reintroduced. “Lupus” reflects the track’s looping path and its goal of providing riders the opportunity to see Mexican Wolves (Canis lupus baileyi), commonly called "El Lobo." The Mexican Wolf is a highly endangered subspecies of the Gray Wolf. It was nearly wiped out by predator-eradication programs, but the species was reintroduced to Arizona and New Mexico in 1998 and has slowly increased to a population of over 200. Riders will travel through the territory of El Lobo - mountainous terrain known as the "Alps of Arizona." This land encompasses not only tributary headwaters of the Gila and Little Colorado Rivers but also some of the tallest peaks in Arizona at Escudilla and Baldy.
Bikepackers will traverse through miles of subalpine meadows lined with conifers and aspens, travel through dense ponderosa pine forests, ride along trout-filled rivers and lakes, and get endless high-elevation views. Cyclists will ride up to 10,000 feet on Escudilla Mountain and down to 5,800 feet along the Blue River near the last federally-designated Primitive Area in the United States. Look forward to riding along the banks of the Black River, staring at the complex neon greens of Hannagan Meadow, seeing the ecological succession of montane forests after the Wallow Fire, riding the perimeter of high-altitude Terry Flat, passing by enormous lakes in big sky country, and catching glimpses of wildlife such as Mexican Wolves, Black Bears, Mountain Lions, Elk, Big Horn Sheep, and Deer. A more detailed breakdown of the entire course can be found here on the El Lobo Lupus route page.
There will be two categories for riders to register under: Solo or Duo (2-person teams)
There will be three course routes for riders to set their intentions:
- Official Version: For competitive riders looking to push themselves against a self-paced clock.
- Touring Version: Optional full El Lobo Lupus version for noncompetitive riders looking to ride the route at touring speed.
- Greer Lakes Loop Version: For riders looking to ride a 1-2 day weekend loop from Pinetop to Greer and back and still participate in the Grand Depart.
Both competitive racing and noncompetitive touring is encouraged for A Fierce Green Ride. All riders’ start and finishing times will be recorded for those who complete the whole route.
Important Event Information
This event is completely unsanctioned and features no prizes or fees. This is not a commercial event and is intended to be kept as a smaller gathering of enthusiast bikepackers. The goal is to ride the entirety of A Fierce Green Ride at your own speed under your own support. You are responsible for your own water, resupplies, and well-being. There are no SAG stations and preparation to be self-sufficient is expected. You are responsible for your own safety and bikepacking knowledge in the backcountry. In the event of an impassable section of the route due to a natural or human-caused disturbance, you are responsible for having your own navigation to detour safely, legally, and appropriately. More information can be found under “Rules.”
Other Important Items
Registration opens at 8 AM (Arizona Time) on June 26, 2025.
Registration will take place via Trackleaders. Registration is free. Everyone registers on Trackleaders even if you intend not to be tracked during the event. Paid tracking on Trackleaders is optional and entirely up to you.
The event will be capped at 40 riders. A waitlist will be set up if that cap is reached. Trackleaders will manage the waitlist.
ITTs are welcome at any time other than the Grand Depart.
Grand Depart Check-In starts at 6:30 am on Friday, September 26, 2025 at the WME Village 8 Movie Theater in Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ. Riders will meet in the southwest corner of the complex’s parking lot adjacent to the movie theater. A Fierce Green Ride officially starts with a roll-out at 7 am sharp. Riders are encouraged to get their own breakfast nearby at Darbi’s Cafe, Cyclelogical Coffee, or on-site at Lovely Bear Cafe before arriving. Please use restrooms and fill water before arriving as neither will be provided at the start.
Riders are encouraged to familiarize and prepare themselves for the route and area by exploring the detailed guide for El Lobo Lupus.
Leave No Trace and Respect for Others are paramount. If you are found to be disrespectful in any way, you will not be recorded as a Finisher. I’m a teacher and don’t mind having tough conversations.
This event happens regardless of weather conditions, so come prepared.
Final versions of all three route versions will be released one week prior to the start on September 19, 2025. This is to take into account possible closures or changes that may happen last minute. Expect to see minor tweaks and updates to these routes until then. Use the maps below to start your planning and preparation.
A pre-ride mandatory meeting will occur the day before the event on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 6 PM. More details to come.
The Grand Depart is open to all styles of riders from those seeking competition to those looking for camaraderie while touring.

Official Version: “A Fierce Green Ride” Route GPX
This is the official competitive version. Riders must stick to the entire route to count as a “Finisher.” Riders who deviate from the route for resupplies, camping, lodging, water, sight-seeing, or a wrong turn must return to the exact spot where they left the course to continue on.
Touring Version: “A Fierce Green Ride” as full El Lobo Lupus Route GPX
Riders who wish to complete A Fierce Green Ride at a noncompetitive touring pace are welcome to do so! They will still be required to complete the official version to count as a “Finisher,” but may opt to use the full El Lobo Lupus route below which includes side-hikes, sight-seeing, and more. The Touring Version GPX track is the expanded El Lobo Lupus route that still encompasses the entire official AFGR version. As long as you return to the exact spot where you left the course for resupplies, camping, lodging, water, sight-seeing, or a wrong turn, you will be counted as a “Finisher.”
Greer Lakes Loop Version: “A Fierce Green Ride” Partial Route GPX
Riders who want to join in on the Grand Depart but don’t have time for the entire ride can opt for the smaller Greer Lakes Loop. The Greer Lakes Loop version still starts and ends in Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona but does a single loop out to Greer and back. This version is perfect for new bikepackers, those seeking an overnight/weekend event, or those with restricted timelines. This can be ridden as Fast and Far or Party Pace. Riders who deviate from the route for resupplies, camping, lodging, water, sight-seeing, or a wrong turn must return to the exact spot where they left the course to continue on.
