Bikepacking: Summer Gear List

This is my list of current bikepacking gear for summer/early season conditions. For context, summer season conditions for me take place in the mountains and deserts of the American west during late spring, summer, and early autumn. This list is pretty much what I would bring for both overnighters and multi-week expeditions in the backcountry across various elevations.

It’s important to note that my gear selection reflects my riding approach and goals. I ride at touring pace when I bikepack; I am not a superfast bikepack racer. I bring gear that will keep me comfortable over trips that can last multiple weeks. I like to visit all the local places of interest, trail towns, museums, and more, as well as side-hikes and viewpoints. My gear selection takes an eye towards ultralight and purposeful but not racer-light.

This list is everything I pack - not just the main items; it’s what I look at when I’m prepping for a trip and should give you a good start to make your own decisions on what to bring. You might notice that my first aid and hygiene kit selections are more extensive than what other users bring. This reflects what I’ve honed from experiences in the backcountry given medical emergencies and repairs, as well as training like Wilderness First Responder. A good selection of gear will help make your trip enjoyable, but they are no substitute for proper training, education, risk management, physical preparation, and sound decision-making in the backcountry.
